Mirik: The Quiet Lake Town Between Darjeeling and the Plains
Tucked between Darjeeling and Siliguri in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, Mirik is a small, laid-back hill town built around the mirror-like Sumendu (Mirik) Lake. It’s the perfect “slow day” stop on a Darjeeling trip: a place for lakeside walks, tea-garden strolls, monastery visits, and clear Himalayan views without the crowds of bigger hill stations.
Why visit Mirik?
Mirik’s charm lies in its simplicity and scenery:
- 1. Sumendu Lake – The heart of town, with a 3.5 km paved circuit, boating, and gentle paths shaded by pine and rhododendron.
- 2. Tea gardens and orange orchards – Slopes below Mirik are dotted with estates like Thurbo and Gopaldhara, plus orchards that turn the hills fragrant in season.
- 3. Monasteries and temples – Small but significant Buddhist centres and local shrines add cultural texture to a nature-focused visit.
- 4. Easy access – Right on the NH10 (Darjeeling–Siliguri) highway, Mirik works beautifully as a first or last night on a Darjeeling itinerary.
Best time to go
Mirik is a year-round destination, but two windows are ideal for most travellers:
- 1. March–May (spring to early summer) – Pleasant days (roughly 15–25°C), blooming flowers, and the first flush of tea in the gardens; great for families and first-time visitors.
- 2. September–December (post-monsoon to winter) – Clearer skies, crisper air, and the best chance of Kanchenjunga views over the lake; October is peak, while late November–December is quieter and still clear.
Monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain, mist, and landslide risk on the hill roads, so mountain views are unreliable and travel can be disrupted.
Top things to do
- 1 .Walk or cycle around Sumendu Lake – The full lake circuit is an easy 3–4 km loop with viewpoints, small shrines, and spots to sit and watch the water reflect the hills.
- 2 . Boating on the lake – Paddle boats and rowboats are available for short, scenic spins on the water, especially popular with families.
- 3 . Visit tea estates – Take guided walks through Thurbo, Gopaldhara, or nearby gardens to see plucking, processing, and tasting; first-flush season (March–April) is particularly lively.
- 4 . Explore monasteries – Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling Monastery is a key Buddhist centre in the region, home to hundreds of monks and an important place for local practice and learning.
- 5 . Sunrise/sunset viewpoints – Short drives or walks to nearby ridges offer wide views over the lake, tea slopes, and, on clear days, the Kanchenjunga range.
- 6 . Orange orchards and flower gardens – In season, visit orchards heavy with fruit and small nurseries showcasing orchids and temperate flowers grown in the hills.

Getting there
- Nearest major rail/air hub: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station and Bagdogra Airport (IXB) near Siliguri, both about 1.5–2 hours’ drive from Mirik.
- Road access: Mirik sits directly on the Darjeeling–Siliguri highway (NH10), so it’s easily reached by shared jeep, taxi, or private car.
- No permit required: Like the rest of the Darjeeling hills in West Bengal, Mirik does not require any special permit for Indian or foreign tourists.
