Dooars: West Bengal’s Wild Gateway to the Himalayas

PStretching along the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in northern West Bengal, the Dooars (or Duars) is a lush belt of forests, rivers, tea gardens, and wildlife sanctuaries—often described as the “doorway” to Bhutan and the mountains. If Darjeeling is the Queen of the Hills, the Dooars is its wild, green cousin below: a place for jeep safaris, elephant encounters, birdwatching, and slow stays in forest lodges

What is the Dooars?

“Dooars” comes from the word “doors”, referring to the mountain passes that lead from the plains into Bhutan and Sikkim. Geographically, it’s a floodplain and terai region crisscrossed by rivers like the Jaldhaka, Torsa, and Raidak, with dense sal and teak forests, grasslands, and endless tea estates. Culturally, it’s a mix of Bengali, Nepali, Adivasi, and tea-community influences, with small market towns and quiet villages rather than big cities.

Best time to go

The Dooars is a year-round destination, but your experience changes with the season:
  • 1. October–March (peak season) – Pleasant, dry weather (roughly 10–25°C), best for wildlife safaris in Jaldapara, Gorumara, and Chapramari, and for clear views toward the Himalayas on good days.
  • 2. April–June (summer) – Warmer and more humid, but still good for early-morning and late-afternoon game drives and birdwatching; forests are very green after winter.
  • July–September (monsoon) – Heavy rains make the landscape intensely green and dramatic, but some parks close or reduce safari operations, and road travel can be affected by landslides.

For most first-time visitors, October to February offers the best balance of comfort and wildlife sightings.

Top things to do

  • 1 .Jeep safaris in Jaldapara National Park – Famous for one-horned rhinos, elephants, bison, and deer, Jaldapara is the Dooars’ flagship park, with both morning and evening safaris from Madarihat and nearby resorts
  • 2 . Explore Gorumara National Park – Centered around Lataguri, Gorumara is excellent for rhino, elephant, and gaur sightings, plus rich birdlife; it’s one of the most accessible parks from Siliguri..
  • 3 . Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary – A smaller, quieter reserve known for elephants, bison, and scenic forest drives, often combined with Gorumara.
  • 4 . Buxa Tiger Reserve and Buxa Fort – Trek through forest trails, visit the historic Buxa Fort (once a prison during the freedom struggle), and look for rare species like the hispid hare and clouded leopard in this more rugged part of the Dooars.
  • 5 . Tea garden stays – Many estates in and around the Dooars now offer heritage bungalows and plantation stays where you can walk through tea bushes, learn about processing, and enjoy quiet evenings in the middle of nowhere

Getting there

  • Nearest major rail/air hub: New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station and Bagdogra Airport (IXB) near Siliguri, both about 3–5 hours’ drive from most Dooars destinations, depending on where you’re heading (Lataguri, Madarihat, Alipurduar, etc.).
  • Local transport: Shared jeeps, private taxis, and resort-arranged transfers are the main ways to move between towns, parks, and tea estates.
